Reloop Press and media - Deposit Return

Global Deposit Book 2024

Reloop has unveiled the fifth edition of its flagship report, the Global Deposit Book, a comprehensive overview of deposit return systems (DRS) worldwide.

Since the first edition in 2016, the report has expanded significantly, reflecting the growing global momentum behind deposit systems as a cornerstone of modern waste management and circular economy policy.

The number of people with access to deposit return systems will grow by 80% in the next two years.

“As of January 2025, nearly 357 million people globally will live in jurisdictions with deposit return systems”, the report reveals. By the end of 2027, it is projected that 70 jurisdictions—covering approximately 641 million people—will have operational programmes for single-use beverage containers.

Known as ‘container deposit’ or ‘refund schemes’ in Australia and ‘bottle bills’ in the United States, these programmes incentivise recycling by requiring consumers to pay a refundable deposit when purchasing beverages, which they get back when returning the empty containers for recycling. By ensuring the collection and recycling of billions of single-use containers, deposit systems reduce waste and the demand for virgin materials, driving a circular economy.

The report provides a comprehensive overview of deposit return systems worldwide, detailing each system’s legislative framework, the scope of containers covered, deposit values, collection infrastructure, and the latest return rates for each programme. It also highlights the evolution of existing systems, offering insights into recent expansions and updates based on data-driven research, best-in-class principles, real-world case studies, and the collective expertise of our team.
