New report examining how deposit return systems can support reuse

Deposit return systems (DRS) have traditionally focused on improving recycling rates for single-use beverage containers. However, in some jurisdictions, deposit systems for both single-use and reusable containers operate in parallel, and consumers can return these containers to the same collection points.

This approach combines reuse and recycling within a single framework, enabling shared infrastructure, improved convenience, and stronger environmental outcomes.

While the ways in which these systems interact and integrate may vary, together they represent what we refer to as a ‘mixed DRS’.
