Reloop joins European coalition calling for robust PPWR equivalency rules

Reloop has joined a broad coalition of organisations across the European plastics and packaging value chain that has published a new position paper urging the European Commission to ensure that recycled content rules under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) support investment in Europe’s recycling sector and maintain a level playing field for all market participants.

The paper from the European Plastics Circularity (EPC) Coalition focuses on the criteria that will determine which recycled plastics can count towards the PPWR’s recycled content targets. The paper outlines why materials should only be recognised where waste collection, sorting and recycling systems operate to standards genuinely equivalent to those required within the European Union.

Our ask is clear: recycled content should help build a stronger European circular economy, not undermine it.

That means:

  • assessing equivalence at system level, not only factory by factory;
  • ensuring clear rules for what recycled content can count;
  • making the rules enforceable through robust audits and penalties.
