Metal cans and non-refillable PET containers are replacing refillable PET and glass as the packaging format of choice in Finland. The number of metal cans sold in 2015 was 12 times greater than the number sold in 2000. Non-refillable PET sales have also experienced a drastic increase, from 28 million units in 2000 to over 400 million today (a 14-fold increase). These increases have been accompanied by drastic sales declines for refillable glass and PET. While refillable glass continues to account for roughly 10% of all sales, refillable PET has disappeared from Finland’s beverage market altogether.
When looking at the charts below, one can see that all three beverage categories experienced a shift from refillable container to non-refillable container in 2007 or 2008.
