Reloop News - Deposit Return

Consistent public backing for new and expanded deposit systems

As of September 2025, 59 jurisdictions have implemented a deposit return system (DRS) for single-use beverage containers, covering nearly 360 million people.

Momentum is building. By 2027, more than 70 jurisdictions are expected to be operating schemes, extending coverage to approximately 644 million people, representing a 79% increase in just two years. This growth is underpinned by sustained public backing.

Over 200 opinion polls conducted between 2003 and 2025 consistently report high levels of support for new, existing, and expanded deposit systems, giving governments added confidence to adopt them as a practical route to higher collection and recycling rates.

Our latest analysis builds on the 2024 fact sheet, compiling these findings and tracking policy rollouts and timelines to provide an up-to-date snapshot of where deposit systems stand and where they are heading next.
